In what can only be described as a tough week for us with a few late season injuries and people with the flu, the weekend’s games looked to be dangerous. I would never underestimate the Sydney Bears they are giant killers at times. They play a very defensive trapping game which can be really hard to play against as they take away the middle of the ice, a place we like to play.
Saturday’s game was hard fought and goals were not easy to come by. Speed wise we were all over them, but tactically they stuck with their systems better. We had a huge crowd who were very vocal and gave us great support throughout the game. Ken Rolph got us rolling early on, just what we needed, but then it dried up for a while. Looking at the lines not all were firing – one thing we have done this season is roll 3 lines as 1-2-3 so keeping pace wasn’t an issue but our puck control was a bit loose at times. Our second line really stood up, having a great game. They have been training well and I thought were our best line on the night. They moved the puck quickly and are not selfish. I truly believe they will look great on bigger ice. A stunning power-play goal by Ric Del Basso from the blue line after a set play showed how these guys are working hard as a unit and creating some very valuable secondary scoring.
The game overall was a tight affair, much more than the scored showed. I also think the pressure of a finals berth started to show. I know I was feeling it. Opportunities to play finals are hard fought as you have to battle a whole season just to get an opportunity. The highlight of the game was Dan Clarke in net achieving his first AIHL shutout. It’s not an easy feat and he played an outstanding game.
Sunday’s game worried me as I knew the Bears would play harder and it would be tough to put them away. It was also a day of celebration with the Thunder’s milestone 50th game, and also for three players, Dave Ruck, Jordan Kyros and Sam Wilson who have played all Thunder games. The next player to reach this mark next weekend will be the hardest working player in the league, Kenny Rolph.
The crowd on Sunday was unbelievable, our best ever. We struggled a bit and they stayed with us the entire game with deafening support. All I can say is that when the crowd chants ‘here we go Thunder’ and bang the boards it gives you chills on the bench and is incredibly uplifting.
Again, it was a tight game but I thought we controlled it. Ken Rolph was injured on Saturday and initially looked like missing Sunday’s game. His foot was very swollen but he toughed it out and I am certainly pleased that he did as he picked up a hat-trick, pleasing his many fans.
The hockey is one thing but this was our last home game of the season and it was a great night with a packed house. A win, a 6 point weekend, and the biggest meet and greet with the fans I have ever seen. However, we still have business to do with a tough road trip to Canberra next weekend where we want 6 points, and secure our finals position.
